Gallia Semiconductor (Gallia) plans to be a manufacturer of Gallium Nitride (GaN) substrate structures for the wide band-gap Power Semiconductor and LED (Light Emitting Diode) markets. We utilize critically differentiated technology and manufacturing processes in turn to produce very low cost substrates that address our targeted markets. The products will be available in state-of-the art 200mm wafer size as well as present industrial production sizes of 150mm, 100mm and 50mm.

Gallium Nitride on Silicon wafers will be sold as epitaxial (epi) Substrates for Power Semiconductor device applications and as Templates for High Brightness LED’s also known as Solid State Lighting (SSL). The technology can be adapted for use on other wafers like Sapphire, Silicon Carbide (SiC) and bulk GaN which Gallia intends to develop.

Gallia has developed an innovative way to significantly reduce the cost of power semiconductor devices and LED lights, which is the current show stopper for mass consumption. The innovation is to use a different and emerging technology called HVPE (Hydride Vapour Phase Epitaxy) to grow the Gallium Nitride compared to the present MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition) technology on SiC, GaN, Sapphire or Silicon wafers. This process is not only innovative but also significantly lowers the cost of growing GaN epitaxially on the wafers. We expect the cost of HVPE GaN on Si templates/substrates to be 75% lower than the current MOCVD cost for GaN on Si. In the past HVPE was developed for bulk III-V material growth including bulk GaN which has not seen much success. Our innovation is in developing Thin Film HVPE technology for epitaxial growth of GaN and related materials.

HVPE technology combined with manufacturing of such wafers in large scale will be disruptive given the size of the emerging worldwide power semiconductor and LED markets by 2020. Gallia Semiconductor will be the seed that causes a coalescence of at the very least GaN epi substrate and template production, at the most a major center of power semiconductor epi substrate and LED template production, and clearly a significant increase in jobs and exports.

Gallia Semiconductor is currently raising the required funding to continue their R&D and pursue Pilot line manufacturing.
